Dartford Mick Jagger Centre

The Dartford Mick Jagger Centre is a performing arts venue located within the grounds of Darftord Grammar School for Boys. The school accepts girls in sixth form.

The Centre is named after the Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger, who was a pupil at the school. Also it has two main stages and the centre holds theatre workshops in the summer.

However, Jagger left the school in 1961 with seven O-levels and two A-levels. Then he went on to study at the London School of Economics, founding the Stones with childhood friend Keith Richards a year later.

In fact, the school was founded (by lawyer William D’Aeth [sometimes spelled “Death”], merchant Edward Gwyn and landowner and philanthropist William Vaughan) in 1576. A 1660 document outlined the original terms for the founding of Dartford Grammar School.

Also, the Dartford Mick Jagger Centre was a 2.2 million development funded by The Arts Council of England, The National Lottery and with funds from Jagger himself.

The Centre was opened by the Duke of Kent and Mick Jagger in March 2000. At the opening, Mick Jagger signed one of the music classrooms with his name, which is still on display today.

The Orchestra of the Thames Gateway, a professional orchestra is based at the centre where their main performances involve mostly music from local composers of the region.

In addition, another group based at the centre is the Thames Gateway Quartet, a professional string quartet. The quartet plays mainly musical student’s compositions.

The centre was built where the school old assembly hall stood. So, now the new space features two fully-equipped, flexible venues, a recording and video studio, rehearsal rooms, a bar and a gallery.

Facilities are open to the local community as well as to the school students.

The centre also hosts the Dartford Community Church which congregates every Sunday at 10:00 AM.
